Most leaders are preparing for AI the way they prepare for new software: budget, training, implementation. But this isn’t a software update. This is a power shift.
What if AI won’t replace you — but will reveal whether you were actually leading.
In my latest Change_liscious podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with Brittany Arthur, Co-founder and CEO of Design Thinking Japan (DTJ), a Tokyo-based Human-Centered AI firm. Brittany helps corporate and government leaders navigate AI with a human-first approach, making technology work for people — not the other way around.
Our conversation went deep into the real opportunities and risks AI presents for leadership today. We explored why so many organizations get stuck focusing on the “what” of AI — the tools, the features, the latest trend — instead of the who and why: who are we building for, and why does this matter for people and impact?
Brittany’s insight is clear: success isn’t about flashy dashboards or speed of adoption. It’s about measurable, human impact. The true signal of effective AI implementation is when leaders and teams walk away saying: “My life is better. My work is better. I feel empowered to make meaningful change.”
We also unpacked the leadership mindset needed in this AI era:
Start with a specific problem, not a vague ambition. Specificity drives clarity and confidence.
Develop your own compass. AI can’t tell you where to go — only help you get there faster. Leaders need their principles, priorities, and non-negotiables to guide every decision.
Focus on human-centered impact, not just productivity or efficiency. AI should amplify people, not replace them.
And for women leaders — whether running a business, raising a family, or leading a team — Brittany emphasized that now is the time to lean in, get hands-on, and shape your own AI literacy. The technical tools are already here; the opportunity lies in how you apply them with ethics, purpose, and strategy.
This isn’t a future scenario — it’s happening now. Those who prepare solely as they would for another software rollout will be left behind. Those who see AI as a human-centered power shift will redefine what leadership can achieve in their teams, their organizations, and their lives.
